I have decided I want to be like Katniss Everdeen in The Hunger Games. However before you start picturing me wearing a bird suit, my bow and arrows strapped to my back, let me explain.
My husband and I went to see the last movie of The Hunger Games series a few days ago. As I sat watching the movie, I found myself admiring the strength and courage of the main character, Katniss. Even though she was scared at times, she believed that somehow she could make a difference by doing the right thing.
For those of you who aren’t familiar with the story line, Katniss was a nobody from the poorest region in a fictional autocratic nation called Panem. Every year the Capitol would host an event called The Hunger Games, which consisted of a gladiatorial combat fought among 24 teenagers aged 12–18, with one boy and one girl chosen by lottery in each district (except the Capitol district). The game lasted until only one survivor remained. The Hunger Games was held to remind the citizens of their failed rebellion attempts, while also providing entertainment for the Capitol citizens.
One year Katniss’ little sister Prim was chosen by lottery to be the female from their district to play in the Games. However Katniss knew that her sister would never survive, so she stands up to take her place (which was allowed). Katniss fully realized that she probably would not live – but she stood up, choosing to die in her sister’s place because of her love for her.
However Katniss was different than most of the participants. Besides being extremely efficient with the bow and arrow, she believed sometimes it is necessary to stand up and fight for what is right.
So… back to me. No, I can’t shoot a bow and arrow, and no, I don’t live in the fictional world of Panem. But I do live in a world where there is evil present all around, and I want to be one of those who stand up for what is right, even though it may cost me everything. But who am I?
The heroes of God listed to the left were no different than you or I! So do you still wonder if God can use you to make a difference? My friends – if you are God’s child then you are in exactly the right position for God to do great and mighty things through you!
The Lord God says in Jeremiah 29:11: “For I know the plans I have for you … plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future” (NIV). These words in the Bible are for us! God wants to use you; and He wants to use me.
The end of the movie showed peace finally upon the earth. But Katniss still has horrible images in her mind that she has a hard time letting go of. Innocent people being killed needlessly. Will these bad dreams ever go away?
But here’s where reality kicks in. Once we get to our heavenly home we really will have peace. And you know what? I’m looking forward to being with the Lord forever, and being surrounded by the people – people just like you and me – who decided they wanted to stand up and make a difference.
